He introduced the present dual system of religious and secular government. Shabdrung unified the country, and established himself as the country's supreme leader and vested civil power in a high officer known as the Druk Desi Bhutan's earliest residents, the Sharchops reside predominantly in eastern Bhutan. Their origin can be traced to the tribes of northern Burma and northeast India. The Ngalops migrated from the Tibetan plains and are the importers of Buddhism to the kingdom. Most of the Lhotsampas migrated to the southern plains in search of agricultural land and work in the early 20th century. Throughout Bhutan, stupas and chortens line the roadside commemorating places where Guru Rinpoche or another high Lama may have stopped to meditate. Prayer flags dot the hills, fluttering in the wind. They allow Bhutanese people to maintain constant communication with the heavens. Bhutan has open three regions to Tourist. These three regions are different due to different topographical features. Western Bhutan: Western Bhutan is comprised of Paro at 7200 feet, Thimphu at 7500 feet and Punakha and Wangdue Phodrang at 4200 feet. Western Bhutan is known for its stunning scenery with rice paddies cascading down magnificent mountains, the pristine rivers that flow through the main towns of Paro, Thimphu and Punakha. Central Bhutan: The Black Mountains separate Western Bhutan from Central Bhutan. This region includes Trongsa and the rich broad valleys of Bumthang including Chhume, Choskhor, Tang and Ura valleys. Central Bhutan is known for its buckwheat production, its sturdy stone houses, and its plethora of monasteries. Eastern Bhutan: This region comprises Mongar, Trashigang and Trashi Yangste. The forests dissipate and the altitude is lower. The warmer climate is suitable for growing corn, rice and wheat. Eastern Bhutan is known for its stunning hand-loomed textiles and the weavers are all masters of the supplementary weft-weave technique General Information: Entry : By air to Bhutan is by Druk Air, the official airlines of Bhutan. The airport is at Paro, 2 hours from Thimpu, the capital. Flights are avilable from Bangkok, Dhaka, Delhi, Kathmandu and Kolkatta (Calcutta). Road Entry : Overland is from the southern town of Phuntsokling, 6 hours from Thimpu. Don't : The Bhutanese Government discourages tourists from giving away candies, medicine, money, or gifts of any kind to the local people as this can lead to the unhealthy practice of begging. PUNAKHA : Old capital of the kingdom has a temperate climate almost year-round. Punakha Dzong at the confluence of the Po and Mo rivers, is the winter home for the monastic community. There are splendid views of the distant Himalayas on the road from Thimpu to Punakha. BUMTHANG : Valley of Bumthang is the ancestral home of Buddhism in Bhutan, and is a place of pilgrimage for the Bhutanese people. The many important monasteries and temples contain a wealth of valuable religious. TASHIGANG : Important eastern town in Bhutan, Tashigang is the most populated district in the kingdom, an area where much of Bhutan's finest weaving come. In the valleys of Merak and Sakteng live in the remarkable Brogpa yak-herders. THIMPU : The capital and the center of government, religion and commerce. It is unique city, with an unusual mixture of modern development alongside ancient tradition. PHUNTSHOLING : The gateway of the south is a thriving commercial center on the northern edge of the Indian plains. The road twists and turns up into the Himalayan foothills, passing through lush forest and scattered villages, at altitudes up to 8,000 ft. PARO : This beautiful valley, rich terraced farmland, is home to some of Bhutan's oldest temples and monasteries as well as Bhutan's first airport, the National Museum, "Tigers Nest" monastery of Takstang. |
